Land Acknowledgement

The McGill Debating Union would like to acknowledge that McGill University is situated on the traditional and unceded territory of the Kanien’keha:ka, a place which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange amongst nations, including the Haudenosaunee and the Anishinaabeg.Unceded territory is territory that was never surrendered or even committed to be shared, unlike in other parts of Canada where treaties were signed with Indigenous communities. The McGill Debating Union recognizes and respects the Kanien’keha:ka as the traditional custodians of the lands and waters on which we meet today. The McGill Debating Union would also like to note that land acknowledgements like this are only the first step and a basic requirement to helping to deconstruct colonialism and Neo-colonialism in its many forms.
