How to Join – McGill Debating Union

Interested in joining the McGill Debating Union? It’s easy! All you have to do is show up to one of our events/practices and indicate your interest in being involved. Experience is not required. At practices, you will be paired with people who are at or around your level of skill and experience.

To keep updated, you can send an email to mcgill.debating@gmail.com, to be put on our mailing list. Our listserv goes out once a week – typically on Tuesday night (Eastern Standard Time). It contains info on upcoming meetings, events, and tournaments!

You can also request to join our Facebook group. We’ve also created a Facebook group for novices (folks who are new to university debate.) You can also “like” our Facebook page. We also have an Instagram that we update regularly. We have a Twitter too!

Additionally, we maintain a membership list if you’re interested in joining the club!

Land Acknowledgement

The McGill Debating Union would like to acknowledge that McGill University is situated on the traditional and unceded territory of the Kanien’keha:ka, a place which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange amongst nations, including the Haudenosaunee and the Anishinaabeg.

Unceded territory is territory that was never surrendered or even committed to be shared, unlike in other parts of Canada where treaties were signed with Indigenous communities. The McGill Debating Union recognizes and respects the Kanien’keha:ka as the traditional custodians of the lands and waters on which we meet today.

The McGill Debating Union would also like to note that land acknowledgements like this are only the first step and a basic requirement to helping to deconstruct colonialism and Neo-colonialism in its many forms. For more resources on this please visit this website.
